On 18 March 2011, the Department of Japanese Studies held its 20th Anniversary Banquet at Chung Chi Staff Club.  We were honored by the presence of special guests, Mr. Mike Mizoguchi of MRT (HK) Co. Ltd.; Mr. Shoichi Takasaki, the Secretary General for the Haruna Scholarship; Prof. Hsiung Ping-chen, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Prof. Shige Makino, Chairman of the Department of Management; Ambassador Takanori Kitamura, Professor of Japanese Studies; Ms. Fong Chee Ming Choo, retired JAS faculty member; and Mr. Yue Kwan Cheuk, former JAS Chairman, and his wife.

At the banquet, teachers, staff, students and alumni gathered together for reunion with old friends, and to meet new members of the JAS community. The Department Chairperson, Professor Lynne Nakano talked about the latest development of the Department.  Mr. Mizoguchi and Mr. Takasaki gave speeches. Year-three students made presentations on their experiences in Japan, year-one students sang, and alumni Benny Shiu performed on the yangqin.

In response to the recent severe earthquake and tsunami took place in northeastern Japan on 11 March 2011, the banquet began with one-minute of silence to mourn the victims and express our condolence and care for the people of Japan. A charity sale booth and a donation box were set up to raise money for disaster victims, and a message board was provided for banquet participants to show their care for those affected by the disaster by writing messages of support and condolence.

It was a memorable evening!
