Message for students:

"Japan is synonymous with paradoxes. It can be viewed through the prisms of its vibrant, colourful youth, fantastical Manga, as well as its avant-guard pop culture. We can also explore Japan by examining its adherence to tradition, formality and ritual, as well as abstract concepts revolving around organizational structure, identity and self. In my case, my research interests are centred on the growing ethnic diversity in Japan, Japanese as a non-traditional country of immigration, constructs of national identity, nationality and citizenship, and Japan's international relations and potential role in Asian regional integration.

However we delve into our study of Japan, we are certain to be struck by the distinct similarities and differences that Japan has with our native countries and cultures. I encourage students to explore the dissimilarities and parallels that exist with their native culture and Japan that they encounter, find opportunities to experience Japanese culture directly, and when possible attempt to personalize their studies in order to cultivate and enrich themselves. "
