In 2014, will there be any changes in the admission requirements at CUHK?
In 2012, when the HKDSE was first introduced, there was no past examination results for reference in evaluating the performance of candidates. Under these circumstances, CUHK decided to adopt minimum eligibility for application that would allow for some flexibility in selection and admission. In the selection process, the University considered the performance of candidates in the 4 core and 1 elective subjects. The minimum requirements for the 4 core subjects of Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies were levels 3322 respectively. Candidates’ performance in extra elective subjects were considered in the selection process, and bonus points were awarded to up to two elective subjects (the 6th and 7th subjects), with the size of the bonus being dependent on performance.
For the 2012 intake, the bulk (almost 75%) of the students admitted to CUHK sat for 7 subjects (or 4 core and 3 electives) or more. The number of subjects students admitted to CUHK attempted is summarized as follows:
| No. of HKDSE Subjects Attempted |
Percentage of Students (%) |
| 8 subjects + M1/M2 |
0.9 |
| 8 subjects |
0.2 |
| 7 subjects + M1/M2 |
47.7 |
| 7 subjects |
25.9 |
| 6 subjects + M1/M2 |
15.3 |
| 6 subjects |
9.8 |
| 5 subjects + M1/M2 |
0.2 |
| Total |
100 |
As the actual number of electives attempted by students admitted to the University was far higher than the minimum requirements, the University is considering changing the minimum eligibility requirements starting from 2015 onwards. From 2015 entry onwards, the minimum eligibility requirements would be 4 core and 2 elective subjects instead of 4 core and 1 elective subjects (subject to approval by the Senate). Bonus points will be awarded to one extra elective subject, with the size of the bonus being dependent on performance.
To allow adequate lead time for introducing the change, for the 2014 entry there will be no change in the University minimum eligibility requirements of 4 core and 1 elective subjects. Applicants should note that there could be adjustments in additional requirements of programmes. To check the additional requirements of the programmes in the current admission exercise, please click here.

| 25. |
How do I select a college? How are students assigned to colleges?
Applicants who have been admitted to a full-time undergraduate programme will be asked to indicate their preferences for college affiliation.
In assigning new students to different Colleges, it is desirable that each College would have students from different faculties/ departments to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and ideas and to widen the students' intellectual perspective. The system for assigning new students to Colleges takes into consideration the preferences of students, their study programmes and admission scores. Priority is given to a new student to be assigned to his/her first-preference College if either of his/her parent is an alumnus of the College.
While students will be assigned college affiliation based on their preferences as far as possible, they may not be assigned to their most preferred College owing to limitation of places available.
