Welcome to the Faculty of Social Science. Social Science subjects have been offered by The Chinese University of Hong Kong since its establishment in 1963. An independent Faculty of Social Science was formed in 1974 to further strengthen our efforts and commitment in nurturing young people to become competent and responsible citizens. Today the Faculty comprises six Departments and two Schools, covering a wide range of Social Science disciplines. They include Architecture, Economics, Geography and Resource Management, Government and Public Administration, Journalism and Communication, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. Social Science is concerned with the well-being of people and society. Apart from disseminating knowledge and professional skills, we place great emphasis on nurturing students with a sense of social consciousness and responsibility, a desire to question and verify, a critical and scientific mind to analyze various social phenomena. Our training enables students to stand up to challenges and to explore opportunities for personal and social development in this rapidly-changing world. The Faculty possesses a solid and internationally recognized academic standing in research activities. Apart from basic research, we also value applied, policy-related and interdisciplinary research. We are committed to inter-institutional and international collaborations. One of our focal points for research is the Greater China region. Our faculty members are active to share their knowledge with local and international policy-making bodies and professional organizations. Through research and consultancies, we endeavor to work for a better society. It’s not how good you are, it’s how good you want to be. If you are committed to making a positive difference in your society and contributing to the well-being of people, I warmly invite you to explore various possibilities with us. Paul S.N. Lee |
