The Faculty of Social Science has recently published an
Anthology:《八度空間—社會科學的視角》
, collecting 40 articles authored by experienced scholars from the eight departments/ schools of the Faculty, analysing various hot social topics from professional angles. The book aims at introducing basic knowledge on social science to young people and arousing their interest in the discipline. It is now available in local book stores. Poster

September 2012    Faculty Tea Reception

The Faculty Tea Reception 2012 was held on September 10 at the Esther Lee Building. Prof. Paul S.N. Lee, Dean of Social Science, addressed the occasion, and faculty members met the freshmen in the programme sessions afterward. More than 300 students and faculty members joined the event in a relaxing and joyful atmosphere.

The Faculty Retreat 2012 was held on 17 May 2012 at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. More than 20 faculty members joined the occasion to share their views and offer recommendations on the strategic development of the Faculty.

April 2012 CUHK MSc in Advanced Environmental Planning Technologies Programme Delegation Visits Liverpool of Britian

To cultivate students' multi-dimensional thinking and team spirit and to provide students with the opportunity to implement the concept of sustainable urban planning and design under an interdisciplinary collaboration, students of the MSc in Advanced Environmental Planning Technologies Programme set out in April 2012 for an overseas site survey and workshop study in Liverpool of Britain under the arrangement of Prof. Tsou Jin Yeu, the Programme Director and Director of Center of Housing Innovation, CUHK. Postgraduate students from CUHK, University of Liverpool and Graz University of Technology, Austria mixed into groups to participate in the joint-university urban planning and design workshop held at the School of Architecture of the University of Liverpool. At the opening ceremony of the workshop, Prof. Steven Holloway, Executive Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool and Prof. Andre Brown, Head of School of Architecture of University of Liverpool delivered welcome speeches. On the last day of the workshop, students presented their planning and design schemes. Students also had an exploration around Liverpool and various other cities in Britain and Europe, to experience the European cities of low density and well-designed green space.

February 2012 Exemplary Teaching Award and Dean's List

Three teachers in the Faculty of Social Science were honoured with the Faculty’s Exemplary Teaching Award on 25 February 2012. They were Prof. Kaman Lee (1st right, front row) of the School of Journalism and Communication, Prof. Takeshi Hamamura (2nd right, front row) of the Department of Psychology and Prof. Wong Hung (3rd right, front row) of the Department of Social Work.

The award presentation ceremony took place in Lecture Theatre 7 of Lee Shau Kee Building, with Dr. Kitty Poon Kit, JP (4th right, front row), Under Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR Government, as the guest of honour. On the same occasion, Dean’s List certificates were presented to students of the Faculty for their outstanding academic achievements.

February 2012 Town Hall Meeting

About 40 faculty members attended the Faculty's Town Hall Meeting held on 17 February 2012 at Lecture Theatre 2, Esther Lee Building. The meeting was an occasion for developments review and two-way communication in the Faculty. A broad range of topics relating to the Faculty were discussed during the meeting and the input from participants shall serve to inform faculty strategic and annual plans.

Dec 2011 Academic Team and Students from Center for Housing Innovations and School of Architecture were Invited to Visit Harbin Institute of Technology

In late December, 2011, at the warm invitation of Prof. Mei Hongyuan, Dean of School of Architecture and President of Architectural Design and Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), the academic team from CUHK including Prof. TSOU Jin-yeu, Director of Center for Housing Innovations (CHI), Professor of School of Architecture, related researchers, postgraduate students from both School of Architecture and MSc Programme in Advanced Environmental Planning Technologies paid a week-long academic visit to HIT. In addition to understanding the architectural teaching and research of HIT, the CUHK team also visited famous urban renewal projects such as Central Avenue, St. Sophia Church. Prof. TSOU Jin-yeu was also invited to give a lecture titled ‘Computational Simulation in Architectural and Urban Design’ which stimulated a fruitful discussion on urban design, quantitative science and applied advanced technologies. Through this academic visit, the friendship and cooperation between both schools have been further strengthened.

Nov 2011 Film Show and Public Forum: In Search of Harmony with Nature: Global Vision and Local Action

The Center for Environmental Policy and Resource Management (CEPRM) and the CU Tree Project co-organized a film show and public forum entitled "In Search of Harmony with Nature: Global Vision and Local Action ".  It was held on 23 November 2011 at LT1, Esther Lee Building, CUHK.  A world-renowned environmental film producer, Director John Liu of the Environmental Education Media Project (EEMP), was invited to share his experience in ecological restoration in China and other parts of the world.  More than 160 people, including academics, professionals, secondary school students and the general public, attended the forum.
